Play Clay Snowman
PLAY CLAY
PlayClay Snowman

Ingredients
About 1/4 recipe (or less) Uncolored (white) Play Clay
1 or 2 toothpicks
A small amount of your favorite color Play Clay
Wire rack and a shallow baking pan
Quick drying craft glue or a low temperature glue gun
Fine tip black marker
One piece of ribbon or fabric or colored paper about 1-inch wide and 12 inches long
One 12-inch long brown pipe cleaner
Orange marker or orange paint
Spray or brush on clear acrylic to seal

How to Make
1. Shaping
Roll the white Play Clay into three balls - a small one for the head, a medium-size the body and a larger ball for the bottom.

2. Insert a toothpick about half its length straight down into the top of the largest ball; gently press the middle-size ball straight down onto the toothpick as if you were building the snowman outside. Unstack the two balls.

3. From a tiny bit of leftover white play clay, shape a carrot nose for the snowman. Place the nose on a small piece of paper or napkin.

4. From the colored Play Clay, shape a hat for the snowman. Check to make sure the hat looks the way you want it to.

5. Gently place all the play clay pieces for the snowman on the wire rack set in the shallow baking pan.

6. Oven Drying: Preheat oven to 350ºF, then turn the oven off. Place the baking pan in the oven and leave it until oven is cold; turn the play clay items once or twice to help them dry evenly. Repeat as necessary until dry. (When reheating the oven, be sure to take the baking pan out before turning on the heat.) Air-dry Play Clay overnight on wire racks, turning occasionally to speed up drying and make items dry evenly.

7. Assembling the Snowman:

  • With the marker, draw eyes and a mouth on the head. Paint the nose orange and let it dry. If the hat is white, paint it; too. Attach the nose with glue.
  • Insert the toothpick into the hole in the large ball. Place a large drop of glue around the toothpick, then top with the middle-size ball.
  • Put another large drop of glue on top of the middle size ball and attach the head. Attach the hat with glue. Coat the snowman on all sides with clear acrylic to seal; let dry. Use the pipe cleaner to make "stick" arms for the snowman.
  • Attach with glue.
  • Drape the ribbon or fabric around his neck as a scarf.
